How Critical Thinkers Lose Their Faith in God

Religious belief drops when analytical thinking rises.

Why are some people more religious than others? I always wondered why i am not able to accept the presence of a greater force. I know that it exists, then why i am not able to accept it??  Answers to this question often focus on the role of culture or upbringing.  While these influences are important, new research suggests that whether we believe may also have to do with how much we rely on intuition versus analytical thinking. In 2011 Amitai Shenhav, David Rand and Joshua Greene of Harvard University published a paper showing that people who have a tendency to rely on their intuition are more likely to believe in God.  They also showed that encouraging people to think intuitively increased people’s belief in God. Here is an abstract from the paper:

Some have argued that belief in God is intuitive, a natural (by-)product of the human mind given its cognitive structure and social context. If this is true, the extent to which one believes in God may be influenced by one’s more general tendency to rely on intuition versus reflection. Three studies support this hypothesis, linking intuitive cognitive style to belief in God. Study 1 showed that individual differences in cognitive style predict belief in God. Participants completed the Cognitive Reflection Test (CRT; Frederick, 2005), which employs math problems that, although easily solvable, have intuitively compelling incorrect answers. Participants who gave more intuitive answers on the CRT reported stronger belief in God. This effect was not mediated by education level, income, political orientation, or other demographic variables. Study 2 showed that the correlation between CRT scores and belief in God also holds when cognitive ability (IQ) and aspects of personality were controlled. Moreover, both studies demonstrated that intuitive CRT responses predicted the degree to which individuals reported having strengthened their belief in God since childhood, but not their familial religiosity during childhood, suggesting a causal relationship between cognitive style and change in belief over time. Study 3 revealed such a causal relationship over the short term: Experimentally inducing a mindset that favors intuition over reflection increases self-reported belief in God.

Based on this, another paper was published in Science Magazine by Will Gervais and Ara Norenzayan of the University of British Columbia found that encouraging people to think analytically reduced their tendency to believe in God. Together these findings suggest that belief may at least partly stem from our thinking styles. (Well obviously but read on). Here is an abstract from this paper too:

Scientific interest in the cognitive underpinnings of religious belief has grown in recent years. However, to date, little experimental research has focused on the cognitive processes that may promote religious disbelief. The present studies apply a dual-process model of cognitive processing to this problem, testing the hypothesis that analytic processing promotes religious disbelief. Individual differences in the tendency to analytically override initially flawed intuitions in reasoning were associated with increased religious disbelief. Four additional experiments provided evidence of causation, as subtle manipulations known to trigger analytic processing also encouraged religious disbelief. Combined, these studies indicate that analytic processing is one factor (presumably among several) that promotes religious disbelief. Although these findings do not speak directly to conversations about the inherent rationality, value, or truth of religious beliefs, they illuminate one cognitive factor that may influence such discussions.

Gervais and Norenzayan’s research is based on the idea that we possess two different ways of thinking that are distinct yet related. Understanding these two ways, which are often referred to as System 1 and System 2, may be important for understanding our tendency towards having religious faith. System 1 thinking relies on shortcuts and other rules-of-thumb while System 2 relies on analytic thinking and tends to be slower and require more effort. Solving logical and analytical problems may require that we override our System 1 thinking processes in order to engage System 2. Psychologists have developed a number of clever techniques that encourage us to do this. Using some of these techniques, Gervais and Norenzayan examined whether engaging System 2 leads people away from believing in God and religion.

For example, they had participants view images of artwork that are associated with reflective thinking (Rodin’s The Thinker) or more neutral images (Discobulus of Myron). Participants who viewed The Thinker reported weaker religious beliefs on a subsequent survey. However, Gervais and Norenzayan wondered if showing people artwork might have made the connection between thinking and religion too obvious. In their next two studies, they created a task that more subtly primed analytic thinking. Participants received sets of five randomly arranged words (e.g. “high winds the flies plane”) and were asked to drop one word and rearrange the others in order to create a more meaningful sentence (e.g. “the plane flies high”). Some of their participants were given scrambled sentences containing words associated with analytic thinking (e.g. “analyze,” “reason”) and other participants were given sentences that featured neutral words (e.g. “hammer,” “shoes”). After unscrambling the sentences, participants filled out a survey about their religious beliefs. In both studies, this subtle reminder of analytic thinking caused participants to express less belief in God and religion. The researchers found no relationship between participants’ prior religious beliefs and their performance in the study. Analytic thinking reduced religious belief regardless of how religious people were to begin with.

In a final study, Gervais and Norenzayan used an even more subtle way of activating analytic thinking: by having participants fill out a survey measuring their religious beliefs that was printed in either clear font or font that was difficult to read. Prior research has shown that difficult-to-read font promotes analytic thinking by forcing participants to slow down and think more carefully about the meaning of what they are reading. The researchers found that participants who filled out a survey that was printed in unclear font expressed less belief as compared to those who filled out the same survey in the clear font.

These studies demonstrate yet another way in which our thinking tendencies, many of which may be innate, have contributed to religious faith. Since System 2 thinking requires a lot of effort, the majority of us tend to rely on our System 1 thinking processes when possible. Evidence suggests that the majority of us are more prone to believing than being skeptical.

Why and how might analytic thinking reduce religious belief? Although more research is needed to answer this question, Gervais and Norenzayan speculate on a few possibilities. For example, analytic thinking may inhibit our natural intuition to believe in supernatural agents that influence the world. Alternatively, analytic thinking may simply cause us to override our intuition to believe and pay less attention to it. It’s important to note that across studies, participants ranged widely in their religious affiliation, gender, and race. None of these variables were found to significantly relate to people’s behavior in the studies.

Gervais and Norenzayan point out that analytic thinking is just one reason out of many why people may or may not hold religious beliefs. In addition, these findings do not say anything about the inherent value or truth of religious beliefs—they simply speak to the psychology of when and why we are prone to believe. Most importantly, they provide evidence that rather than being static, our beliefs can change drastically from situation to situation, without us knowing exactly why.

The Trouble With Wi-Fi

To most people, Wi-Fi is something of a miracle. Within 150 feet of some hidden base station, your laptop, tablet or phone can get online at cable-modem speeds—wirelessly.

But Wi-Fi is also something of a mystery. So here is a list of most common questions and answers given by expert experts i found on issue of scientific america.

Often my laptop detects a four-bar Wi-Fi hot spot, but I can’t get online. What gives?
In the mid-1990s Alex Hills built a huge wireless network at Carnegie Mellon University that became the prototype for modern Wi-Fi networks—a story he tells in his book Wi-Fi and the Bad Boys of Radio. I figured that he would be perfect for this one. His explanation:

“Two issues might cause this. First, radio problems. The bars are an indication of how strong the Wi-Fi signal is, but they don’t tell you anything about interference or other radio problems that can corrupt a strong signal.

“Second, most Wi-Fi systems connect to wired networks that connect you to the Internet. But there may be problems in these wired networks: problems with link speeds, switches, routers, servers, and the like. You have a good Internet connection only when all of the links in the chain are doing their jobs.”

Why do expensive hotels charge for Wi-Fi but inexpensive hotels don’t?
Don Millman’s company, Point of Presence Technologies, runs the Wi-Fi for 150 hotels. His answer:

“Expense accounts: higher-end hotels attract business travelers who expense their stays, so the fee matters less to them.”

We’re frequently warned about the hazards of using free open hot spots, like the ones at coffee shops. What, exactly, is the risk?
Glenn Fleishman has covered networking for more than a decade (currently on the Economist’s Babbage blog):

“A bad guy across the room might be running free software that sniffs every bit passing over the wireless network and grabs passwords, credit card numbers, and the like.

“You don’t have to worry about banking and e-commerce Web sites; they’re protected by secure, encrypted connections.

“But without encrypting your e-mail and regular Web sessions, you never know if someone sitting within ‘earshot’ is slurping down your data for the purposes of identity theft or draining a bank account. My tip: always use a virtual private network (VPN) connection, which blocks anyone on the local network from seeing anything but scrambled data.”

What’s up with the “Free Public Wi-Fi” hot spot that sometimes shows up at hotels and airports—even on planes—but that rarely yields any actual connection?
I’ll field this one: Don’t bother trying to connect to “Free Public Wi-Fi” (or “hpsetup” or “linksys”). It’s never a working Wi-Fi hot spot. It’s actually a viral “feature” of Windows XP running amok.

Whenever Windows XP connects to Wi-Fi, it also broadcasts that hot spot’s name to other computers as an “ad hoc” (PC-to-PC) network so that they can enjoy the connection, too. Someone, somewhere, once created a real hot spot called Free Public Wi-Fi, probably as a prank. Ever since, that name has been broadcast wirelessly from one Windows computer to another. (Macs see the phony hot spot, too, but don’t rebroadcast it.)

In public places, people try and fail to connect—but now their PCs start rebroadcasting this ad hoc network’s name, too, and on and on it goes. Best bet: don’t connect.

Dubai : Construction Against Nature !!!

Dubai is well known for its enormous construction & experimenting with the design , it was alright till it was synchronized with nature , like building Burg Khalifa , considering all the nature ‘s aspect wind and balancing on the ground .

But than Dubai expanded its experiments , and started making man-made islands ,  These Islands were built of sand dredged from the bottom of the gulf. It is not structurally stable and is in the middle of a big body of water. Between tides and liquefaction there was no hope for them in the first place. They are building temples on sand foundations…To build temples on sand foundations is foolish enough on dry land, let alone in the middle of the ocean.

Now not only is it making island on water , but beneath the surface it is disturbing the marine life ecology ,  From the air, The World and Palm projects create a highly visible impression on the landscape of Dubai. And back down at sea level, significant changes in the marine environment are leaving a visual scar of another type. As a result of the dredging and redepositing of sand for the construction of the islands, the typically crystalline waters of the gulf of Dubai have become severely clouded with silt.

Construction activity is damaging the marine habitat, burying coral reefs, oyster beds and subterranean fields of sea grass, threatening local marine species as well as other species dependent on them for food. Oyster beds have been covered in as much as two inches of sediment, while above water, beaches are eroding with the disruption of natural currents.

The recent survey has been showing that the land is sinking in the sea on the newly made : The world islands , ofcourse the dubai government and their geologist are denying any such process happening , but the inside scoop says it all , maybe its just a beginning and they would cover it for now , but if you are playing against nature , you will pay the price .
Well I am in favor of new technologies , and reaching a new height of architecture and design but not on the cost of degrading the nature , you cannot go on the path of new world , by crushing the nature , it should both walk parallel , and both complimenting each other .

In short summing up all the problems that has been involved in this new construction of : The World Island is
The construction of the various islands off the coast of Dubai has resulted in changes in area wildlife, coastal erosion and alongshore sediment transport, and wave patterns. Sediment stirred up by construction has suffocated and injured local marine fauna and reduced the amount of sunlight filtered down to seashore vegetation. Variations in alongshore sediment transport have resulted in changes in erosion patterns along the UAE coast, which has also been exacerbated by altered wave patterns as the waters of the Gulf attempt to move around the new obstruction of the islands.
It is not a surprise that  Dubai’s megaprojects have become a favorite cause of environmentalists ,

“The islands are gradually falling back into the sea,” Richard Wilmot-Smith QC, for Penguin Marine, said. The evidence showed “erosion and deterioration of The World islands”, he added.

“If you build on a low coast like that you’re exposing yourself to dramatic consequences, a high wave or high sea, or even if the sea rises,” said Frederic Launay, director of World Wide Fund for Nature in Abu Dhabi.

Thought of the Day :

Human civilization is not something achieved against nature; it is rather the outcome of the working of the innate qualities of man.

The undiscovered side of YOU – – – >

Sometimes you notice someone is too ordinary to fit into ordinary group of people , and that same someone is picked and placed in the group of the most un-ordinary people , and it comes to that extent that ‘someone’ is even more better than them !!

Why is it ? How come a person gone unnoticed suddenly turns into someone so powerful you can never imagine , what was that was blocking the view ?? Why not before ?? Why Now ??

It doesn’t make sense , but it s a fact , some people do not FIT in to the system , and they are the one who bring changes to the System …. It ‘s not easy to change the Rules that are going on for so long that you don’t even remember , but you know there s something that doesn’t seem right in it , But if anyone dares to change , they are crushed .

It s not a work for just an ordinary people , the change can be initialize by the  one who doesn’t belong to the system , only that person can dare to change it , the history has witnessed such changes , whether it is Martin Luther King or Hitler , some lost the track & went the wrong way , power blurred their vision , cause that s the effect power holds …..

And some never found the way , and were lost even before they could realize that they had that light in them , the key stays in unleashing that other side of you , finding what you were suppose to do , it may not be great or it might be some thing extra ordinary , you would never know that if you don’t push yourself to that extreme point , where that other side of you is released ……

There are two kind of people , leaders or warriors who fight bring the change , sacrifice their life , and the other are the followers , the disciples , who have to make sure that the path is followed, and the sacrifice is not gone in vain ….

Now the question lies : How to discover that ?? How to know what you are supposed to do ??? How to know who you are ???? and which path are you suppose to follow ?????

Sometimes the answer is shown to you by someone , sometimes it s only you who can reach the your destiny , but their are little clues you left for yourself unknowingly in your life , think ,& think very deeply , cause those memories are hold tightly , safely in your subconscious mind …………………….

It’s more than just a Tattoo ….

There was a time when tattoos were meant for only the bizarre ones , but now with the modern trends boosting up & the celebs promoting it , its just like another accessory you add up , only the difference is its more like permanent one.
It’s hard to look authentically rebellious or menacing these days, when even well-behaved businessmen wear earrings and ponytails and college students destined for quiet suburban lives have body piercings and tattoos.

Well I am not promoting Tattoos , cause I am really in favor of not to  temper with your skin, but what got ma attention was the growing likeness for the tattoos , & to be specific , the meaning behind those random shapes & designs. You can tell what is going on , or what had been there in a person ‘s life by looking into details of the tattoo designs.

Okay some are quiet the obvious ones ,
teenager with her boyfriend’s name and two lovebirds emblazoned in the small of her back, Or rock-band fan with tattoo of guitar on his arm.

Tattoos have been used for centuries to reflect changes in life status, whether passage into adulthood or induction into a group like the military or a gang.Although in recent years, tattoos have also become a fashion accessory, a trend fueled by basketball players, bands and celebrities.

My personal  favorite ones are : Phoenix , Butterfly & Dragon tattoos …..

well of course i didn’t picked them randomly or just mere by their attractive design , they have got a deeper meaning,
-> Phoenix :

It illustrates the enduring popularity of Japanese tattooing       traditions. But the phoenix is also a design with a rich mythological history in both Eastern and western cultures. Tales of the phoenix appear in ancient Arabian, Greek, Roman, and Far Eastern mythology. In both Greek and Egyptian tales, the phoenix represented the sun, dying in flames at the end of the day and rising each morning.

yeah yeah ma inspiration dates back to Harry potter , but than you can’t blame me !!

-> Butterfly :

A generally feminine tattoo design choice and a perennial favorite. It’s ranking shows the growing influence that women have in tattoo culture. Even so, the Butterfly is not entirely the exclusive domain of the feminine. The Roman Emperor, Augustus, took it as his personal symbol, and the warrior priests of the Mexican Popolucas peoples sported the Butterfly as a motif on their breastplates. Their Butterfly was also the symbol of fire. Delightful, magical and transformational, the Butterfly reminds its admirers of the mystery of nature and the richness of human imagination.

Well this was no surprise , Butterflies have always stayed a girl s favorite choice .

-> Dragons:

A true classic tattoo design that shows the influence of Japanese and Chinese culture in western tattooing. The dragon is a culturally far-ranging character whose apparent bad temper should be interpreted as simply amoral, neither good nor evil. Popular with both men and women.

Now this one has got a mystery element; coz all dragons have unique characteristics …

Anyways , even though all this designs look pretty attractive , its still suggested that before you just go out there in the flow of emotions or hormones , to get the tattoo , remember a tattoo that cost several hundred dollars could require several thousand dollars and many laser sessions to remove, + the pain !!
